Traffic calming in Altdorf: partial driving ban decided on Marktgasse!

In a significant step to improve the traffic situation in Altdorf, the municipality has decided to partially ban motor vehicles on Marktgasse. This ban, which allows exceptions for residents, deliveries and public services, is part of the municipal traffic plan for sustainable spatial development. The aim is to relieve motorized private transport from the congested town hall square, as nau.ch reports.

The town hall square no longer meets the requirements of the various user groups. Pedestrians feel unsafe because of the traffic situation, and public transport is hindered by vehicles parked incorrectly. Motorized private transport is currently a challenge as it has difficulty connecting to the main road. In order to counteract these problems, the local council is planning concrete measures to relieve the pressure on the square, which are embedded in a comprehensive plan that was drawn up in 2010 and which regularly updates the official gazettes.

Planned traffic measures

The partial driving ban in Marktgasse is accompanied by the addition of “feeder service permitted”. In addition, traffic flows in the parking garages and parking spaces on the edge of the center should be absorbed. In the future, access to the parking spaces in Winkel will be via Hellgasse and the Schützenmatte car park instead of via the heavily frequented Rathausplatz and Marktgasse. Important exceptions remain, such as access for residents, visitors of residents, employees of companies, as well as for delivering vehicles and emergency units.

To avoid slow traffic, Höfligasse is signaled as a one-way street. This measure serves to reduce traffic congestion in the village center and to offer pedestrians more safety. The local council plans to retrofit retractable bollards if necessary to further control the traffic situation.

Future steps and information sessions

The municipality has already informed affected residents and is planning a public information event on the implementation of the measures. This took place on September 2, 2020 under the current Corona protective measures to give citizens the opportunity to find out about the changes. According to altdorf.ch, this initiative is supported by the documents of the traffic plan, which was drawn up together with political parties, business representatives and experts. A total of 33 instructions were developed to improve the traffic situation.

Overall, the implementation of the community's means of transport represents an important step towards a sustainable and user-friendly design of living spaces, which should benefit both pedestrians and public transport. It remains to be seen how the situation will develop with the implementation of the new traffic regulations.
