Dr. Mike Krug: New chief physician at the Wangen Joint Center from November!

Dr. On November 1, 2025, Mike Krug will be the new chief physician of the Clinic for Orthopedics and Trauma Surgery and the Allgäu-Oberschwaben Joint Center at the Westallgäu Clinic in Wangen. The specialist moves from the Memmingen Clinic, where he worked as senior physician, and succeeds PD Dr. Benjamin Ulmar, who is leaving the OSK at his own request. OSK managing director Franz Huber is pleased with the rapid recruitment of a highly qualified chief physician.

Dr. Krug brings extensive experience, particularly in the field of endoprosthetics. He has been the main surgeon since 2018 and coordinator of the endoprosthetics center in Memmingen since 2022. His goal is to further strengthen the importance of the Westallgäu Clinic as a center for hip and knee replacements. The Wangen orthopedic team is made up of seven renowned surgeons who offer comprehensive joint medicine, including hand, foot and shoulder surgery.

Comprehensive expertise in the field of endoprosthetics

Dr. Mike Krug is a specialist in orthopedics and trauma surgery with several additional qualifications and is trained as a physiotherapist. After studying medicine in Jena, he came to the region in 2012 for further training in special trauma surgery. His knowledge of the requirements for a certified endoprosthetics center will be a valuable asset to the Wangen hospital.

In 2024, the Clinic for Orthopedics and Trauma Surgery in Memmingen cared for over 2,300 inpatients, with around 1,000 of them receiving an artificial joint. The on-site medical care center offers outpatient contact points for joint patients in the fields of surgery, orthopedics and radiology. The structural renovation of the clinic is being planned in order to provide important medical impulses for the future.

Growing importance of joint medicine

The orthopedic university clinic in Heidelberg also has a long tradition in endoprosthetic care. Every year, over 1,000 joint replacement operations are carried out in the endoprosthetics center. The aim of these facilities is to provide individual treatment to patients with the highest quality, based on the latest clinical findings. At the same time, attention is paid to restoring the patient's quality of life, taking age and physical activity into account.

The clinic relies on muscle-sparing and minimally invasive surgical procedures as well as bone-saving implant systems. Many patients not only need initial care, but also replacement operations for existing artificial joints. The importance of rules of conduct to extend the service life of artificial joints, which can experience wear and tear during daily use, should not be underestimated. Recommended activities include hiking, swimming and cycling, while martial arts and team sports should be avoided.

The change of Dr. Krug nach Wangen will not only strengthen clinical expertise, but also interdisciplinary collaboration with other medical disciplines to ensure comprehensive patient care.
