Today, July 4, 2025, the police in Stuttgart will be checking speeding in particular. Current reports show that there are two locations for mobile speed traps in the city: Fellbacher Straße in Untertürkheim and Waldebene Ost in Stuttgart-Ost. The first speed measurements on Fellbacher Strasse, which is in a 50 km/h zone, took place in the afternoon, while the measurement in the east forest level was reported at 6:59 p.m. Road users should strictly adhere to the speed limits, as speeders and pushers must expect fines and driving bans. The Road Traffic Act (StVO) regulates the punishment of these violations and provides for clear penalties.
In addition, the police emphasize that temporary speed measurements are possible throughout the city and are carried out constantly. These measures increase traffic safety and are intended to effectively reduce speeding in particular. This is one of the main goals of speed cameras: reducing traffic accidents caused by fast driving.
The technology behind the speed cameras
In Germany, various technical measuring devices are used to document traffic violations. Speed cameras can be installed both stationary and mobile. Common types of speed cameras include radar systems, video tracking systems, and laser and induction loop measuring devices. These are calibrated regularly to ensure the accuracy of the measurements. Legal requirements also regulate the distance between the speed camera and the speed limit sign, which must be between 75 and 250 meters. Special tolerance deductions apply to speed measurements: Drivers who drive below 100 km/h have a deduction of 3 km/h, while at higher speeds a 3% rule applies, which, for example, provides a deduction of approx. 4.5 km/h at 150 km/h.
An important detail in traffic monitoring concerns the operation of devices that interfere with or display traffic monitoring measures. According to Section 23 of the StVO, it is forbidden to carry devices such as radar detectors or laser jammers. Although speed camera apps on cell phones are not punishable as long as they are not used while driving, externally installed radar detectors that are operational are considered punishable.
Reporting speed cameras via radio stations is permitted, while the use of speed camera apps is not permitted. Drivers are allowed to point out checks to each other, but not by making mistakes such as flashing their headlights, as this can be punished with a warning of 10 euros.
