Current rankings show that the University of Stuttgart continues to be one of the best universities in the world. The Center for World University Rankings (CWUR) recently published its annual ranking, which analyzed almost 21,500 universities. The University of Stuttgart ranks 555th overall, making it one of the top 2.6 percent of institutions worldwide. In the teaching category, the university achieved rank 133, placing it among the top 0.6 percent internationally. The university is also strong in the area of graduate careers: it ranks 431st and is in the top two percent worldwide.
The evaluation by the CWUR analyzes four central categories: quality of teaching, professional success of graduates, research performance and the number of scientists with significant awards. The research performance, which accounts for 40 percent of the overall result, puts the University of Stuttgart in 584th place, which puts it in the best 2.7 percent worldwide. Particularly noteworthy is the weighting of the “teaching” and “professional success of graduates” categories, which each account for 25 percent of the overall rating.
Additional rankings and achievements
Compared to the results of previous years, the University of Stuttgart also shows remarkable progress in other renowned rankings. According to the QS World University Ranking 2025, the university ranks 314th out of 1,503 universities, placing it in the top 21 percent worldwide. Particularly noteworthy is the rating in the “Citations per Faculty” area, where the university achieved 228th place internationally and 10th place nationally.
The university has also made progress in the area of sustainability, ranking 239th internationally and 16th nationally. There is also an improvement in the “Employer Reputation” category: Here the university ranks 289th internationally and 14th nationally.
Strong performance in technical disciplines
The University of Stuttgart also has outstanding achievements in engineering subjects. In the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2024, the university is placed among the best 175 worldwide in the “Engineering and Technology” area and ranks 7th nationally. The top 100 rankings in two disciplines are particularly noteworthy: In the “Architecture / Built Environment” area, the university is ranked 51-100 internationally, making it the third best institution in Germany. The discipline “Engineering – Mechanical, Aeronautical & Manufacturing” is ranked 48th out of 532 internationally.
As the only German city with less than a million inhabitants and two universities, Stuttgart remains an important location for research and teaching. The combination of traditional strengths in engineering and a clear focus on the quality of teaching underlines the continued importance of the University of Stuttgart in the academic landscape at both national and international levels.
