Serious light rail accident in Bad Cannstatt: U13 interrupted!
Due to a traffic accident, the U13 light rail line in Stuttgart-Bad Cannstatt is currently interrupted. The interruption affects the route between the Bad Cannstatt and Rosensteinpark stops. The disruption was detected at 1:15 p.m. and is expected to last until around 2:30 p.m., according to the Stuttgarter News report. Travelers and commuters are requested to check the journeys in the electronic timetable information.
The accident occurred on Wednesday evening, shortly after 6 p.m., in the Augsburger Straße/Deckerstraße bridge area. Two light rail trains on the U13 line collided, presumably due to a signal malfunction. In the incident, a 35-year-old man who was on the tram heading towards Untertürkheim suffered minor injuries. The material damage to the light rail vehicles is estimated at a six-figure amount, as Neckarufer reports.
Consequences for traffic
As a result of the accident, rail traffic had to be closed for around two hours. Stuttgarter Straßenbahnen GmbH (SSB) has set up a taxi replacement service as a ring line between the Bad Cannstatt Wilhelmsplatz, Wilhelma, Rosensteinpark and Rosensteinbrücke stops. Road traffic in the area of the accident was also closed for around 50 minutes, which led to minor traffic disruptions.
The investigation into the exact cause of the accident is currently ongoing. Investigations are necessary to determine whether the signal was actually disturbed and how the collision could have occurred. This situation is reminiscent of previous incidents, such as the serious accident on February 23, 2024 in Stuttgart, in which several people were injured and a tram driver was trapped. In this context, the Stuttgarter Zeitung reported a total of 15 injuries.
