Fewer accidents on the way to school: This makes the way to school safer!
On June 8, 2025, Waiblingen will report on decreasing accidents on the way to school and the safety campaign for children in Baden-Württemberg.

Fewer accidents on the way to school: This makes the way to school safer!
In 2023, positive progress was made in the area of road safety in Baden-Württemberg. In total, the police recorded 374 traffic accidents on the way to school, which represents a decrease of over 12% compared to 423 accidents in 2022. The figures also show that accidents involving children on the roads fell from 1,805 in 2023 to 1,739 in 2024, as ZVW reported.
However, the high number of injuries and deaths remains particularly worrying. In 2024, 35 children and young people with serious injuries and 339 with minor injuries had to be treated after accidents on the way to school. Tragically, a school child in the southwest also died in 2023, the same sad result as the previous year. In addition, 14 children aged 0 to 13 suffered fatalities in road accidents, an increase compared to 2022, which recorded only one such case.
“Safe route to school” campaign
State Minister Thomas Strobl appealed to all road users to be particularly careful. The police and municipalities will monitor compliance with speed limits in front of schools and appropriate parking along sidewalks and cycle paths. The technical condition of bicycles is also taken into account. It is also particularly important that children are properly secured in the car.
Preventive measures for parents
Parents are advised to walk the route to school with their children and practice to increase their safety. Children's field of vision is often limited; Therefore, it makes sense to look at dangers from the children's perspective. Reflective elements on school bags and clothing can also increase visibility. Parents should also make sure not to bring their children to school by car in order to avoid additional traffic.
These preventive measures are even more important when you consider that in 2022 there were 426 traffic accidents involving students as active road users in Baden-Württemberg. At that time, 48 children and young people were seriously injured, 391 were slightly injured, and tragically one student had a fatal accident.
The coming days will be particularly exciting for over 110,000 new students in Baden-Württemberg. They will be enrolled in school, which underlines the urgency of these measures.
