Police cover violations in the Rems-Murr district: alcohol and tobacco sold to teens!
Extensive checks on the subject of youth protection took place today in the Rems-Murr district. The police checked compliance with the Youth Protection Act in 60 outlets with regard to the sale of alcohol and tobacco to young people. These test purchases, carried out between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m., showed that 20 stores were violating the law by selling alcohol and tobacco to minors. The controls were carried out in cities such as Schorndorf, Winterbach, Plüderhausen, Urbach, Rudersberg, Welzheim, Alfdorf and Kaisersbach, the Stuttgarter Nachrichten reported.
Five young test buyers were each accompanied by two police officers. A comparison with a similar check at the end of May 2024 shows that the number of violations has decreased, but young people managed to get the desired goods in every third attempt. The salespeople and store managers were informed of the results immediately after the test purchases, and correct behavior was determined in a total of 40 sales locations. Nevertheless, fine proceedings were initiated against the 20 responsible stores.
Youth protection regulations in context
The legal regulations regarding the sale of alcohol and tobacco to children and young people vary greatly, not only within Germany but also internationally. While the Youth Protection Act in Germany provides clear guidelines to protect minors, Switzerland provides different provisions depending on the canton. Information on these cantonal youth protection regulations is available from the Federal Office of Public Health (BAG). These include, among other things, regulations on the dispensing age and advertising restrictions for alcohol and tobacco, as shown on the website of the Federal Social Security Office.
In Switzerland, the sale of alcohol and the supply of tobacco products to minors is subject to strict rules. While in some cantons the sale of tobacco is only permitted up to the age of 16, in other cantons buyers must be 18 years old. This highlights the need for such controls to ensure that young people do not consume alcohol and tobacco, which was also a central aspect of our local controls in the Rems-Murr district.
The police's measures in this district were generally received positively, which shows the importance of ongoing controls and raising public awareness of youth protection regulations. They reflect ongoing efforts to ensure the protection of young people in the area of alcohol and tobacco sales, as recognized as an important concern in Swiss legislation.
