Paper art in Waiblingen: Angela Glajcar starts a spectacular scholarship!
Angela Glajcar, a renowned paper sculptor, has been selected as the main fellow of the Waiblingen Scholarship for Drawing and Paper Art 2026. In this role she will work in Waiblingen for six weeks, during which time she will create new installations made of hand-torn paper. These works of art will impress with their monumental dimensions and their spatial character. According to the Stuttgarter Nachrichten Glajcar is already known in Waiblingen because it is in autumn In 2024, an impressive six meter long, three meter high and 90 kilo work of art was exhibited in St. Michael's Church.
The Waiblingen Paper Art Scholarship was first launched in 2023, with the first main scholarship recipient being Katrin Ströbel. As part of the scholarship, she worked with three young artists – Valentine Gardiennet, Nele Hendrikje Sandner and Khadija El Abyad. During her stay, Angela Glajcar will not only create new works, but also act as a mentor for future talent. These young talents will be selected after an international call for proposals in the fall, according to the Eva Mayr-Stihl Foundation.
The scholarship to support the art scene
The first work phases of the International Waiblingen Paper Art Grant took place from July 1st to October 8th, 2023. The scholarship is financed from the estate of Renate Reichert, a donor who left funds to support contemporary artists, to the Eva Mayr-Stihl Foundation. Anja Gerdemann, the director of Galerie Stihl Waiblingen, emphasizes the role of the scholarship in supporting young artists. She also sees the project as an opportunity to establish Waiblingen as an art city in the Stuttgart region and beyond.
The Stihl Waiblingen gallery, which opened in 2008, specializes in works made of and on paper and shows three temporary exhibitions every year on a wide range of topics. The results of the scholarship holders' work will be presented in the Galerie Stihl Waiblingen and in the Galerie im Kameralamt. The first exhibition opening took place on July 28, 2023 and could be visited until October 8, 2023.
The art and artistic career of Angela Glajcar
Angela Glajcar was born in 1970 and studied sculpture at the Academy of Fine Arts in Nuremberg. She initially worked with wood and metal before discovering the flexibility of paper. Her use of paper combines both sculptural and graphic qualities, which is particularly emphasized by Anja Gerdemann. Throughout her artistic career, Glajcar has found innovative ways to use paper as a material, and her work represents an important connection between tradition and modernity in art.
