Coach change at HC Oppenweiler/Backnang: Klisch and Blumenschein take over!
Today, on October 15, 2025, the second division handball team HC Oppenweiler/Backnang (HCOB) made an important realignment in the coaching position. Tobias Klisch and Volker Blumenschein now form the new coaching duo and are expected to bring a breath of fresh air into the team, which had a difficult start to the season. The decision on the long-term coaching staff will be announced by the winter break.
The two coaches are taking on responsibility on an interim basis and are successors to Stephan Just, who previously trained the team. Managing director Jonas Frank emphasizes that Klisch and Blumenschein bring clear ideas and have a common understanding of the challenge. Dragan Jerkovic will also remain part of the coaching team, whose work is viewed positively. The challenges that lie ahead of the new coaches are not small: The HCOB, now a newcomer to the second division, celebrated an important step this season by being promoted to the 2nd handball Bundesliga for the first time.
Promotion and current season
HC Oppenweiler/Backnang secured the championship in the South season of the third league early on and prevailed in the promotion round against HC Empor Rostock and HC Eintracht Hildesheim. The greatest success in the club's history is reflected in the fact that the club now plays in the second division after starting out in the Württemberg league 12 years ago as TV Oppenweiler. After a partnership with TSG Backnang in 2014, promotion to the third division followed in 2015, where the club was active for ten years. The last two seasons resulted in successful participation in the promotion round, which was ultimately crowned in 2025.
Seven new signings were signed for the 2025/26 season, including Valentin Abt from TuS N-Lübbecke and Tjörvi Týr Gislason from Bergischen HC. At the same time, there are also some departures, including player Markus Dangers, who ended his career, and several other players who moved to other clubs.
Outlook for the upcoming games
The HCOB's next game is on Saturday, October 15th at 6 p.m. against TV Großwallstadt. The first home game in the MURRTAL Arena will take place on Sunday, October 26th at 5 p.m. against HBW Balingen-Weilstetten. These encounters are crucial to reverse the current trend and make the season positive.
The new season has already started with a defeat in the DHB Cup against HC Elbflorenz Dresden (25:30), which gives the coaches additional motivation to quickly stabilize the team and get it back on the road to success. Right now, the support of the fans in the MURRTAL Arena is more important than ever to support the HCOB on its way to the 2nd Handball Bundesliga.
It remains to be seen how the coming weeks will go and whether Tobias Klisch and Volker Blumenschein can turn things around. HC Oppenweiler/Backnang is facing a crucial phase in which every point counts.
