New café in Herschfeld: enjoyment between history and romance!
On June 15, 2025 there will be good news from Bad Neustadt: The Café auf der Salzburg opened its doors as usual. Visitors can look forward to a delicious selection of coffee, cakes and ice cream surrounded by historic walls and blooming roses. This place is not only a culinary highlight, but also a piece of history that shapes the region.
Near the café, the Guttenberg family castle commemorates the important noble family, whose best-known member, Karl Ludwig Freiherr von und zu Guttenberg, was born in Salz in 1922. He completed his high school diploma in Würzburg and initially studied law before moving to the Julius Maximilian University of Würzburg, where he studied history up to his doctorate. After his studies, he founded his own advertising agency in Hamburg and began a career as a journalist, including as head of the Bild newspaper in Berlin.
Career and resistance against National Socialism
Karl Ludwig was not only an entrepreneur, but also a committed historian and publisher. In 1931 he founded the Office for Conservative Literature in Würzburg and published several magazines that dealt with history and tradition. His clear stance against the National Socialist regime was expressed when he refused membership in the NSDAP in 1937 because of concerns about the treatment of religious and church issues.
During World War II, Karl Ludwig worked in military counterintelligence under Admiral Wilhelm Canaris. However, his courageous role in the resistance against National Socialism led to serious consequences. After the failed assassination attempt on Adolf Hitler on July 20, 1944, he was arrested and brutally abused by the Gestapo. Tragically, on April 24, 1945, just before the end of the war, he died under unclear circumstances near the Berlin prison on Lehrter Strasse, along with two other prisoners.
A legacy that lasts
Despite his short lifespan, Karl Ludwig left behind an important legacy. In the last years of his life, he regularly returned to the Guttenberg family castle, where he spent his childhood. These ties to home reflect the deep-rooted relationships many people have with their region and make the place all the more remarkable.
The café on the Salzburg and the castle not only represent culinary enjoyment, but also a piece of history that the Bad Neustadt region and its state participants keep in their memory.
