Silver duet for Germany: Recurve teams shine in Antalya!
As part of the World Cup in Antalya, which opened its doors today, June 8, 2025, the German recurve teams celebrated success with two silver medals. “Super Sunday” began with an exciting clash against the Olympic champions from Korea. The German team, consisting of Florian Unruh, Jonathan Vetter and Moritz Wieser, started the encounter with a 0-4 deficit.
With a confident improvement in the following passes, the athletes from Germany were able to come back with their precise shots. Most notably, the 11-ring rule helped them tie the first sets (60-59, 60-59). A jump-off was necessary, in which each athlete had to fire an arrow. The duel was exciting until the end, as the German shooters drew level (9-9, 9-9). Ultimately, Kim Woojin from Korea prevailed, while Unruh only scored eight.
Medal in mixed competition
However, Florian Unruh had a second chance when he competed in the gold final with Katharina Bauer. After initially trailing 38-39, they equalized 40-38. Unfortunately, the duo couldn't come up with a strong third pass, which was lost 35-37. The Koreans secured the final pass with 41-37 rings, resulting in another silver victory for the German athletes. Katharina Bauer then expressed her satisfaction with the team performance and the experience in the tournament.
Individual competitions and outlook
In the individual competition, Jonathan Vetter impressed by reaching the semi-finals of a World Cup for the first time. Despite a defeat against the Brazilian Marcus D'Aldmeida (0:6), Vetter was able to score one point in the comparison against the young French shooter Baptiste Addis (1:7). The athlete had mixed feelings about his performance. Florian Unruh was eliminated in the quarterfinals against Addis and took eighth place, while Katharina Bauer lost to Hsu Hsin-tzu in the round of 16 and took ninth place.
National coach Oliver Haidn drew a positive conclusion from the competition and emphasized that the German teams fought in the medal matches. In total there were two medals and two fourth places. Home training and the World Cup qualification in Munich are now on the agenda for the athletes.
An additional highlight of the day was the victory of Katharina Raab and Paolo Kunsch, who won the silver medal in the compound mixed competition. The Antalya competitions showcased the hard work and dedication of German archers as they prepare for the challenges ahead.
The discipline of archery requires athletes to have not only technical skills, but also mental strength and adaptability in different conditions. The aim is to hit precisely at distances of 70 to 90 meters, which also requires a lot of training and effort. It takes an archer approximately two years to confidently hit the target at 70 meters - a testament to the high level and dedication required to be successful in global competition , according to information from Bogenschiessen Göttingen.
