Smartphone seminar for seniors: How to use Google cleverly!

On November 6, 2025, the “Handy-60-Plus” event took place in Haus am Rankbach in Renningen. This event was aimed specifically at seniors and aimed to make it easier to use smartphones and other Google services. Franz Heidt, an experienced senior lecturer, introduced the participants to Google's diverse products and services. A particular focus was on practical application in order to improve the everyday lives of seniors.

A central topic of the workshop was the introduction to Google Drive, which explained how to use the free cloud storage on both smartphones and PCs. Participants received useful information about storing and accessing photos, documents and files. Heidt also explained how additional storage space can be purchased and how the Drive for Desktop function can be used.

Key features and applications

Another focus of the event was the presentation of Google Maps, Earth and Street View. These services not only help seniors plan trips, but also allow them to create routes, search for connections and find local service providers, and book tickets. The ability to display parking spaces, gas stations and restaurants directly on the map offers additional benefits in seniors' everyday lives.

The participants were also introduced to creating and saving individual routes. The introduction to Google MyMaps gave them the opportunity to design their own maps and export such routes. In addition, other useful Google functions such as contacts, calendar and the Google Docs, Sheets and Presentations applications were presented. The aim was to teach seniors how to use their smartphones efficiently and to give them valuable tips on using Google services.

Development of technology and senior education

Google, founded by Larry Page and Sergey Brin on September 4, 1998, is now a leading technology company. The company offers a wide range of services, from cloud computing to search engines and mobile applications. This is also reflected in the offers made available to seniors. Smartphones can be an asset to retirees, enabling communication via WhatsApp, email and video calling and providing access to important information. Banking apps and online shopping also make it possible to carry out everyday tasks independently.

To make it easier for seniors to use smartphones, many institutions such as adult education centers and senior citizens' associations offer courses. These courses cover basic operations, app usage and important safety aspects. In this way, seniors can acquire skills that not only make it easier for them to use their devices, but also increase their confidence in technology. Recommended providers for such smartphone courses include Seniorenwissen, which provides a variety of courses and tutorials for seniors.
