Seniors explore the construction machinery giant Liebherr in Ehingen!
On June 26, 2025, a group of seniors from Heiligenzimmern visited the Liebherr company in Ehingen, which is known worldwide as the largest manufacturer of construction machinery. The excursion began with a packed bus that took participants to the impressive factory site, which covers over one million square meters, including 290,000 square meters of covered area. The seniors first received a comprehensive introduction to how the company came about, supplemented by informative pictures and explanations.
During the factory tour, visitors were fascinated by how the largest cranes in the world are planned, built and put into operation. The assembly, final inspection and delivery area of the nine-axle lattice boom mobile cranes and the strongest crawler crane in the world were particularly impressive. A good lunch in the company canteen, to which the seniors were invited, interrupted the tour and offered a welcome opportunity to exchange ideas and relax.
History of the Liebherr company
The Liebherr company history begins in 1949 when Hans Liebherr founded the “Hans Liebherr Maschinenfabrik” in Kirchdorf. The company's first steps took place in a 100 square meter wooden house, which provided both office and living space for Hans Liebherr and his family. By 1950, production had increased to 160 cranes and the company achieved annual sales of 2.2 million German marks. Just a year later, in 1951, the number of employees rose to 189 and sales reached 4 million German marks. These figures impressively demonstrate the rapid development of Liebherr, which developed into an important industrial company in the region.
Today, almost 80 years after it was founded, a special exhibition entitled “Liebherr – Ideas become reality” in the Biberach Museum shows the company’s innovative strength. Anyone interested can take part in public tours without prior registration on Thursdays at 6 p.m. and Sundays at 11:15 a.m. and 3 p.m. and learn more about Liebherr's remarkable development, which was characterized by continuous growth and technical progress in its early years.
After a long, eventful day, the seniors were visibly relieved as they made their way back in the afternoon. After a short break, they warmly thanked the factory companions for the interesting and educational tour and said goodbye to the Liebherr company.
