Research days in Ernhüll: Hundheim cave secrets discovered!

The Cave and Karst Franconia Research Group recently held its annual research days in Ernhüll. 30 members took part in the event and were intensively involved in the measurement and documentation of a cave and ponor system near Hundheim. This scientific initiative is part of a longer tradition of speleology in the region, which is characterized by the commitment of volunteer scientists. The work is not only of academic interest, but also contributes to the preservation of this special natural area.

The focus of the activities was the measurement of newly discovered parts of the cave and the search for continuations of the narrow cave. This cave has a special functional significance: During heavy rainfall or intensive snow melting, it acts as a water sluice or ponor by absorbing surface water and draining it into deeper karst water levels. The measured values were recorded using modern digital devices and then processed on the computer. The results of this research work will be integrated into the Franconian Alb cave register, which documents an extensive collection of around 4,000 caves, including plans, descriptions, photo documentation and location information. n-land.de reports that ...

Combining science and adventure

The research group is supported by the FHKF (Franconian Cave and Karst Research), which acts as the central contact for cave and karst matters in Franconia. The FHKF has set itself the goal of researching and protecting karst features and caves in the region. Caving is viewed as a voluntary activity that combines a spirit of adventure with scientific precision. A responsible approach to the natural environment is of central importance to the group, which is also reflected in the workshops during the research days.

During these workshops, participants not only learned about microscopy and the identification of small creatures, but also gained insights into how to use dowsing rods, presented by an experienced dowser. The site inspections to check small caves showed that unauthorized uses, such as fire stoking, are an issue in the region. Fortunately, all objects checked were without any problems.
